meaning of zone

Hello,

This is probably a silly question as I find myself embarrassed to ask it, but in lesson 1 of the Reading Russian workbook, we find the sentences:

"Is this a zone? No, this is not a zone. It is a Stop sign."

and

"Is this a zone? Yes, this is a zone."

What exactly does "zone" mean here?

Thanks,
Mandy

Dear Mandy,
There are no silly questions. There are students that want to learn Russians.
The curious students keep things moving and this way help others.
Probably, other sutdents have similar questions, but feel shy to ask.

Zone means district, area, spot...
Here this word is not connected to the Stop sign in any meaning. It is just a new word that easy to read for the English speaker.

Thank you once again, Olga. That is my understanding of the word "zone," but I thought maybe it meant something different to Russians since virtually no English speaker would ask, "Is this a zone?" tongue

My older son and I are so enjoying learning Russian with this program. My younger child was obsessed with foreign languages when he was five and six (his gift went along with his autism); consequently I have used and evaluated dozens upon dozens of language learning materials in over 100 languages from Alsatian to Zulu. In my humble opinion, Russian Step By Step is the best one of all!

Thanks again,
Mandy

Dear Mandy,
Thank you for your nice words. We are glad that our books are working for you.
Is it possible for you to leave a feedaback on our books on Amazon?

I read somewhere that people with autism are more like foreign language speakers. The idea to read the sentence or the text several times in order to understand the meaning helps a child to get used to a routine.

Have a great day!

Olga,

Yes, I would be happy to write an Amazon review; let us get further along in the course first so I have more to say. We are almost done with the Reading Russian Workbook, then we'll be taking some online lessons with Natasha beginning in January. (Just to clarify in case you speak with her, the son who will be learning with me online is NOT the one with autism. smile )

Thanks again for your help,
Mandy
